Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor, fell deeply in love with Mumtaz Mahal, the daughter of a Persian nobleman, shortly after their marriage in 1612. Shah Jahan, devastated by the loss of his beloved, became a recluse in his later years, and he was eventually overthrown by his son, Aurangzeb. He spent the remainder of his life imprisoned in the Agra Fort, where he could gaze upon the Taj Mahal, a bittersweet reminder of his love for Mumtaz.
