War stories - Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871):

he Franco-Prussian War into those three phases:

  • Conditions Before the War:

    • Prussia, under Otto von Bismarck, had been rapidly expanding its power, defeating Austria in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. This created a unified North German Confederation, alarming France, which feared a powerful neighbor.
    • French Emperor Napoleon III was facing internal political pressures and sought a diplomatic victory to bolster his regime. He also desired to maintain France's position as the dominant power in continental Europe.
    • The candidacy of a Hohenzollern prince (related to the Prussian royal family) for the vacant Spanish throne became a major point of contention. France feared being encircled by Hohenzollern rulers.
    • Bismarck skillfully used the "Ems Dispatch," a telegram summarizing a meeting between the Prussian King and the French ambassador, to manipulate public opinion. He edited the dispatch to make it appear that both sides had insulted each other, inflaming nationalist sentiments in both France and Prussia.
  • How the War Started:

    • France, feeling provoked by the edited Ems Dispatch and under public pressure, declared war on Prussia on July 19, 1870.
    • Prussia, having already secured alliances with other German states, mobilized its superior military forces quickly.
    • The Prussian army, led by Helmuth von Moltke the Elder, was better organized, equipped, and trained than the French army.
    • The Prussians achieved a series of decisive victories, including the Battle of Sedan, where Napoleon III and a large portion of the French army were captured. This led to the collapse of the Second French Empire.
  • How the War Ended:

    • After the capture of Napoleon III, a new French government, the Third Republic, was proclaimed, but it continued the war.
    • The Prussians laid siege to Paris, which eventually fell in January 1871.
    • The war officially ended with the Treaty of Frankfurt in May 1871.
    • The treaty imposed harsh terms on France:
      • France was forced to cede the territories of Alsace and Lorraine to the newly formed German Empire.
      • France had to pay a large war indemnity to Germany.
      • The German empire was proclaimed in the palace of Versailles.

    • This war created a long lasting sense of revanchism inside of france, that would be a large contributing factor to the first world war
